While much of the State was in Origin mode, a select group dined in style last Wednesday night had other priorities.
As they sipped Dom Perignon and supped on Niel Perry's morsels, they learned all about the stunning sapphires and rubies that hail from the Packer clan's Ellerston property near Scone.
The gems feature in pieces created by a group of four local and six American designers who are eager to have their wares alongside Australia's South Sea pearls and pink diamonds on the global jewellery stage.
The Aussie jewllers using the gems are Jan Logan, Percy Mrks, House of Guilians and Rox Jewelery.
The open-cut Ellerston mine is one of the world's most environmentally sensitive.
"Australia has never before been known as a source of rubies and sapphires so natural and so rare, " says Gerry Manning, who runs the show at Ellertson.
